Finding the way to an unsaturated, Indian cleantech market
India has a significant and augmenting need for new cleantech solutions. In addition, they now have an economy mature enough to attain them. This makes India an obvious target for Danish cleantech companies, and not only for the large ones. With the European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC), all Danish enterprises can receive expert advice in their aim to access the Indian market.

There is a massive demand for new, clean technology solutions in India and the country's economy is well set to procure them. Nonetheless, this initiative does recquire knowledge and a familiarity with the local environment. This is what EBTC can offer.

India is drastically increasing its energy consumption. With growth rates reaching 16 percent in the fields of biotech, energy, the environment and transport, a growing middle class of nearly 300 million people, and an additional 100 million by 2032, India is definitely a mouthwatering prospect for prescient, Danish cleantech companies. However, the road to the Indian market is certainly not free of obstacles. Poul V. Jensen, Director of EBTC, emphasises that it requires  considerable effort to penetrate the Indian market.

- Much of Danish clean technology is developed in small or medium-sized companies where they do not always have the necessary resources and knowledge to access the Indian market, but we are here to help, says Poul V. Jensen.

The wind does not blow the same way in India

The wind turbines are spinning happily in the Danish countryside. The water is clean and the biogas plants are producing masses of energy. We have a great deal of knowledge about cleantech in Denmark, but according to Poul V. Jensen, each area has its challenges where India is concerned.

- For instance, offshore wind in India is an area that is more or less completely untouched and uninvestigated. There are significantly different depths of water and at times winds similar to hurricanes. This requires new kinds of technology and serious consideration because one cannot simply copy the Danish or European way of operating.

Government rupees lead the way

EBTC's new departments in India are partly financed by the EU, and the knowledge, services and activities of the centre are available to interested companies. With its specific knowledge about cleantech, EBTC is planning to play a supplementary role to the embassy, chamber of commerce and the Confederation of Danish Industries (DI). This expertise will allow it to offer something the other organisations do not.

The 25 employees in India carry out relevant market analyses. Equally importantly, they also have knowledge about and are acquainted with the local environment and can facilitate links between Danish companies and projects in India. And there are plenty of projects, says Poul V. Jensen.

- These sectors are experiencing rapid growth. The Indian authorities are going to be making huge investments. We are already seeing mature projects at a national or local level where the financing is more or less settled. It is very beneficial for Danish companies to enter the process at this stage where it's possible to quickly transfer and sell the technology.

Partners on the menu

India is one of the biggest emitters of CO2 in absolute figures, which means that there is clearly room for improvement. EBTC wants to help Danish firms to get a piece of the action.

- We are arranging a number of events including delegations to India with European companies. These firms operate in specific areas and this could, for instance, be an occasion where three or four Danish enterprises could participate and meet potential Indian clients.
